Famous and beloved manga artist Kazuki Takahashi passed away at 60 years old. The Yu-Gi-Oh series creator was found “floating while wearing snorkeling gear in the waters off Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, on Wednesday morning,” according to the Japan Times. Until today Japanese coast guard officials could confirm that the body belonged to Takahashi. However, the cause of death is still unknown.
Kazuki Takahashi began his career in 1982, but it was until 1996 that we would find out about his ultimate manga masterpiece. That would be when he released Yu-Gi-Oh to the world and turned himself into a legend. It started with a manga, then a card game, but later on, this went much further. Today we have a variety of transmedia presence of Yu-Gi-Oh in video games, books, movies, and tons of merch. According to Kotaku, the latest Yu-Gi-Oh game, Master Duel (released earlier in 2022), was pulling in over 200,000 concurrent players just on Steam.
Setting aside his evident fame with the card-game manga (and series), Takahashi was also involved in other critical, creative projects. For example, two weeks ago, he participated in creative decisions about a collaboration he worked on regarding Marvel characters such as Iron Man and Spider-Man.
