Splatoon 3: Is Shiver gender non-binary? Nintendo responds

The community thought that the character is part of the LGBTQIA+ collective

Lately, we have seen a lot in the entertainment media that the issue of inclusion is becoming very relevant. More and more people are looking to see and have better representation in the games they enjoy, and recently there was speculation about whether a character is binary or not.

The thing is that in Splatoon 3, there is specifically a character named Shiver which just so happens that in the preview of the last Nintendo Direct, fans noticed that there were no references or mentions of Shiver's gender in the game's dialogues; this in all translations into other languages. The omission of pronouns supported that theory.

Also, other elements, such as the androgynous appearance of the character and the color palette of the Deep Cut group, were reminiscent of the non-binary flag.

However, Nintendo has finally provided an answer to clarify more about Shiver's character in Splatoon 3.

IS SHIVER A NON-BINARY CHARACTER?

A Nintendo insider responded to these theories and confirmed that Shiver is not part of the LGBTQIA+ collective, commenting that Shiver is actually a female character.

Speaking to The Verge portal (via TheGamer), Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo's senior vice president of development and publishing, revealed that the character identifies as a woman. In addition, he commented that the feminine pronouns She / Her appear in the game to refer to her, even though they were conspicuous by their absence in the most recent advance.
