Our friends at Game Informer had access to an exclusive God Of War Ragnarök gameplay video, where Associate Editor Jason Guisao explained all about the new combat abilities that specially two combat designers explained to him. Here we can see what Kratos and Atreus can use in the game including upgrades to weapons, and oh boy… this is brutal.
As you may be aware Sony Santa Monica hasn't shown much about the game, so it came to our attention that randomly, this short video gave us a glimpse of its intense and brutal combat. The video only lasts about 2 minutes and we can appreciate how much it has changed.
Trying to add variety to the combat mechanics.
This God of War Ragnarök combat video seems to be an extended version of the combat sections that we had already seen in a trailer for God of War Ragnarök. In it, we have the opportunity to see Kratos and Atreus fight against enemies using a variety of attacks.
For example, the video shows the different shields available including Dauntless and Stonewall and their functions. Also, we got the chance to see the new triangle attacks called Weapon Signature Moves, here Kratos can now infuse his weapons with ice or fire to deal elemental attacks called Frost Awaken and Whiplash.
Another striking detail is that the combat in God of War Ragnarök appears to be faster and more aggressive than in God of War (2018), or at least that's the impression we get from this footage.
“We tried to create systems you want to engage with that are fun, very playful, lots of different routes. And when we looked at the combat in the last game, we were like, ‘We can push this further; we can find new toys and ways of playing with enemies and strategies.’ That’s been the guiding principle more than anything else.”
