Crystal Dynamics officially takes control of Tomb Raider

The studio is now in charge of personal data and gameplay

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that it will take full control of the Tomb Raider franchise, which although it will no longer be under Square Enix's umbrella, will still feel the pressure of its new developer.

Last May, Embracer Group announced its intention to buy a large part of Square Enix's western branch. This intention was then confirmed in August with the acquisition of Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montreal for a total of $300 million.

Crystal Dynamics announced on its website a few days ago, on September 5, that it now controls the Tomb Raider franchise. Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain are now also owned by the company.

“We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited,” Crystal Dynamics stated.

As a result of this acquisition, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliate, Embracer Group) is now the owner of these games and the manager of the gameplay and personal data related to them.

Crystal Dynamics is working on the development of a new Tomb Raider game with Unreal Engine 5. Although there are still not too many details of the title, an insider recently shared an alleged scrip with some details and news about the project.
