While all hope seemed lost to finally see the fourth installment of Koei Tecmo's survival horror game series Fatal Frame land outside of Japan, we were surprised to learn that this installment will be back with a remaster scheduled for release worldwide in early 2023 on Nintendo Switch, PS 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
For the moment, a physical edition is not confirmed for the West. However, in Japan, the game will be released in physical format on Switch and PS4. This title was originally released exclusively for Wii on July 31, 2008, developed by Tecmo, Nintendo Software Planning & Development, and Grasshopper Manufacture.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will feature the original Japanese voices. The main character, Ruka Minazuki, is dubbed by Mamiko Noto. The story takes place in 1980, ten years after the mysterious disappearance of five girls during a festival held on the remote island of Rogetsu, located in southern Japan.
When they were finally rescued, the girls lost their memories, with only the faint recollection of a melody and a masked woman dancing in the moonlight as if possessed. These five girls are the protagonists of this story. To solve the mystery of their friend's death, the three remaining girls decide to go to the island again, also in the hope of recovering their lost memories.
The return of The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows the remastering of The Priestess of the Black Waters, and will therefore also benefit from improved graphics and gameplay.
The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was generally well received by the press and players, including in the West, despite the lack of localization, and it is beloved for its story and atmosphere.
This entrywas often criticized for its controls, even if there were good feedback about the fights. It should be noted that the game used gameplay elements exclusive to the Nintendo Wii, including the handling with the Nunchuk.
