Facebook begs its employees to spend time in the Metaverse

A new report exposed the issues with Horizon Worlds

Seems like not even Facebook employees like its own Metaverse. According to an article by The Verge, the news portal obtained some internal memos where executives and team members are struggling with quality issues.

What catches more attention, is that one of these memos reads that Meta employees don’t use the app at all. “Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds. You can’t do that without using it.”

On another one dated September 5, Meta’s VP Vishal Shah said that the team would remain in “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year to “ensure that we fix our quality gaps and performance issues before they open up Horizon to new users.

A lot of issues to take care of…

The report also noted that even though the platform was set to arrive on mobile and desktop via a web version, the release date may be pushed back as the number of issues presented in the project has reached worrying levels.

“Since launching late last year, we have seen that the core thesis of Horizon Worlds — a synchronous social network where creators can build engaging worlds — is strong. But currently feedback from our creators, users, playtesters, and many of us on the team is that the aggregate weight of papercuts, stability issues, and bugs is making it too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon. Simply put, for an experience to become delightful and retentive, it must first be usable and well crafted.”

Now, Shah likes to mention in this memos that the company's key issue is that the people building it inside appear to not be using it that much.

“For many of us, we don’t spend that much time in Horizon and our dogfooding dashboards show this pretty clearly.”

Actually is surprising to him that the team don’t love the product and this will cause that users will not like it too. Sadly for him in following memos shows the employee's reluctance to use the app. So he ended up writing that a plan was being made to “hold managers accountable” for having their teams use Horizon at least once a week.

“Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds. You can’t do that without using it. Get in there. Organize times to do it with your colleagues or friends, in both internal builds but also the public build so you can interact with our community.”

To be fair, he is right if the developers don’t like the product probably future users will not like it as well and with this news certainly, we are not very sure about giving it a chance.

After the report was published, a Meta spokesperson shared a statement with The Verge saying the company is “confident that the metaverse is the future of computing and that it should be built around people.” She noted that Meta is “always making quality improvements and acting on the feedback from our community of creators. This is a multiyear journey, and we’re going to keep making what we build better.”

Of course, we hope that things work out in the future in the meantime we will keep an eye open for their future updates.
