Imagine spending months training hard to be the best Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player so that the best prize is a cup.

No, it's not a joke. Nintendo Australia announced the Smash Australian Summer Open, a new smaller-scale competition circuit for the popular fighting video game. The event will open its doors on December 18.

Individuals wishing to participate must be legal residents of Australia or New Zealand, have access to a Nintendo Switch and a copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In addition, they must have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and, of course, a stable internet connection.

BUT THE PRIZE WILL BE A CUP

The prizes for the Smash Australian Summer Open are unattractive. While other professional tournaments give out rewards worth thousands of dollars, exclusive items such as t-shirts and a mug will be on offer here.

Specifically, the top 10 players will get a commemorative coin with the Super Smash Bros. logo, a tournament t-shirt, 500 My Nintendo points, and a special mug. The other 40 participants will take home a mug and some My Nintendo points.

Without a doubt, they are rewards that leave something to be desired. The competitive event tries to be as serious as possible, as it uses rules that are seen in other prestigious tournaments. The matches will be 1v1 with 3 lives, it can only be played in Battlefield/Omega type scenarios and the use of special items is prohibited.

But tell us, what do you think of this news? Do you think the company should offer better prizes? Let us read you in the comments.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
