On this Monday, January 2, we just mentioned the issues that Death Stranding Standard edition online servers were experiencing for many consecutive days, but today, January 3, it is reported by players that servers and up and running again (I confirmed it as well). However, the issue seems to be happening for a few players, yet likely, it works fine for you if you play it today.
The game publisher 505 Games has not given any official statement on the matter but has been responding to some of the comments on Twitter from users asking for the servers to be fixed soon. Below you can see some of the replies from 505 Games given this very day January 3 a few hours before the servers were fixed.

At the moment, we can affirm that the different theories created were due to the impatience of the players who were eager to play their new game obtained by Epic Games Store with its online features to have a complete experience of the game as intended by Kojima Productions.
Since many people are returning to regular working hours after a few days off, the staff who can maintain the servers have likely returned from their break, and players will have no more complaints about it. Although, there were a few who already figured out why it took so long for the connection to be restored and were patient about it.

While many new porters have the opportunity to experience Sam Porter's adventure in Death Stranding, the anticipated sequel Death Stranding 2 will remain in development through 2023 and we will possibly get further news on the official release date, which we currently expect to happen sometime in 2024.
