This week the winners of the Steam Awards 2022 were revealed, an award whose winners are chosen by users of the Valve platform. As often happens in all ceremonies, the results generated controversy. On this occasion, the protagonist was Cyberpunk 2077.

What happens is that CD Projekt RED's science fiction video game won in the "With love and dedication" category, which seeks to recognize titles that receive content after their original release. The other nominees were Dota 2, Project Zomboid, No Man's Sky, and Deep Rock Galactic.

“This game has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but like the good parents they are, these developers still nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still receiving content after all these years,” reads the category description.

CYBERPUNK 2077 WINS A PRIZE AT THE STEAM AWARDS 2022 AND CAUSES CONTROVERSY

It seems that many gamers feel that Cyberpunk 2077 does not fit that description. On forums like Reddit and on Steam's review section, they believe that the recent popularity of the open-world title is solely due to the good reception of Netflix's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime.

Likewise, some fans argue that all the updates and new content that the Polish studio released was a must when considering the disastrous original release.

“I wouldn't exactly say that CDPR's post-debut labor was a 'labor of love.' Rather, I would say that it was a moral and contractual obligation,” commented one user. "Deep Rock Galactic, Project Zomboid, and No Man's Sky deserve it, not Cyberpunk. I don't care what others say," another opined.

On Steam, many gamers criticized Cyberpunk 2077's triumph and proceeded to review bombing to express their displeasure. Of course, the reviews that predominate are positive.

“This [game] won the award because of the TV show and nothing else. No content has been added to this title for 2 years compared to literally any of the other nominees. The game is rubbish and will still be”; commented a player on Steam.

“Shocking how a decent animated adaptation can fool so many people into thinking the source material is worth forgiving and awarding,” said another fan.

We must remember that CD Projekt RED's sci-fi title was a disaster during its original release in late 2020; bugs, technical problems and other inconveniences were just the tip of the iceberg. Since then, the developers have released multiple updates that have improved the experience and added new content.

Last year, Cyberpunk 2077 got a second chance and received a wave of positive reviews thanks in large part to the premiere of the Netflix animated series.

But tell us, do you think the CDPR game deserved to win the award? Let us read you in the comments.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
