PlayStation is so interested in bringing its franchises to film and TV that it already has a bunch of adaptations in development. While the adaptation of its racing IP Gran Turismo will debut soon, the company could well be planning another car racing project.
We're talking about WipEout, a futuristic-themed racing franchise that came to life thanks to Psygnosis, which was formerly multiplatform but became a PlayStation exclusive after Sony bought Psygnosis, which then operated as SCE Studio Liverpool until 2012.
GRAN TURISMO DIRECTOR IS INTERESTED IN WIPEOUT
Well, apparently PlayStation has plans for this franchise, perhaps not in terms of video games, but certainly regarding cinematographic productions.
The one who started talking about this was filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, responsible for District 9 and more recently Gran Turismo (2023).
The developer is still involved in his most recent collaboration with Sony, but it caught attention that he could well be preparing another after he posted the following message on Twitter: "FEISAR, AG SYSTEMS, PIR-HANA".
In case you didn't know, these are names of fictional racing teams in the world of WipEout, which made people think that they could well be clues about a possible adaptation of the franchise.
But it didn't end there, as Blomkamp (who has confessed to being a fan of this series) hours later asked where he could find the best information about WipEout.
The most interesting thing is that Damon Fairclough, former creative writer at Psygnosis who worked on the WipEout universe until Fusion, responded to his call, so he couldn't have found a better person and even offered him a lot of material.
Both creators agreed to stay in touch privately, which Blomkamp appreciated.
Unfortunately, we don't know if the conversation between both creators continued, as they agreed to keep in touch but privately. That said, we don't know why Blomkamp wanted information about the WipEout universe, but we doubt it was just to learn more about the series for no reason. Fans speculate about the possibility that he wants to gather information to try to make a movie or TV adaptation, something that caused a lot of excitement, especially if it's animation.
