Activision Blizzard plans to bring its titles to Steam and move away from exclusivity with Battle.net on PC. The first project in this initiative is Overwatch 2, the popular free hero shooter. Unfortunately, its debut on Valve's platform was far from ideal.
While the free-to-play game achieved a significant peak of 75,608 concurrent players in its first 24 hours on Steam, the reception was extremely negative. This situation highlights that the community is deeply unhappy with some decisions made by the development team in recent months.
OVERWATCH 2 FACES BACKLASH
At this time, only 10% of the 47,984 reviews are positive. Reading through the comments, it's evident that fans are disappointed with the free-to-play model the game adopted since its release and the prominence of microtransactions. Additionally, users criticize the fact that new story missions cost $15 USD.
"Overwatch 2 has no respect for you, it's an attempt to pry open your wallet while masquerading as the game it used to be”, wrote a disgruntled fan. "While it retains its charming design, wonderful cast of characters and some of the best multiplayer maps I’ve ever played on, Overwatch 2 brought a few enormous fundamental downgrades that leave it critically flawed", wrote another player.
Fans also criticized the cancellation of the original plans for the PvE mode. Although the title received 3 new story missions, the progression tree promised by developers in 2019 is conspicuously absent.
While many critiques are genuine reflections of users upset, it appears there are also gamers who joined the review bombing in an attempt to troll. In any case, it's clear that Blizzard Entertainment's free-to-play is facing a challenging moment, at least in terms of public image.
Overwatch 2's Steam debut coincides with the launch of Season 6: Invasion, which introduced a new hero, 2 new maps, a game mode, 3 story missions, hero challenges, an 80-level reward Battle Pass and more.
