Overwatch 2 has been one of the most controversial games in recent years. Since its launch in 2022, it has faced various controversies due to its free-to-play model and microtransactions. While fans have been vocal about their dislikes, they recently turned to Steam to express their discontent. This situation prompted the project's director to respond.
Last week, Blizzard's free-to-play game arrived on Steam. Unfortunately, the community's reception was less than favorable. On the first day, it became a target of review bombing and received thousands of negative reviews. Shortly after, it became the lowest-rated game in the history of Steam.
Although many of the complaints are genuine and point to real issues, a significant percentage of the negative comments came from trolls, Team Fortress 2 fans, and Chinese players who were upset due to the game's unavailability in their country.
Aaron Keller, director of Overwatch 2, breaks the silence and responds to review bombing
Undoubtedly, it was a challenging time for the team behind Overwatch 2. A week after the controversy, director Aaron Keller finally addressed the review bombing and discussed the game's future.
In a post on Blizzard's official blog, Aaron Keller discussed the new content that arrived in Season 6 and the community's reactions. Towards the end of the statement, he candidly addressed the recent wave of negative reviews.
"We released the game on Steam last week and, while the review bombing wasn't a fun experience, it was great to see many new players jumping into Overwatch 2 for the first time. Our goal is to make the game more accessible than ever to more people," the director highlighted.
The creative director acknowledges that many of the criticisms revolve around the PvE component that was announced in 2019 and unfortunately will never come to fruition. He understands the disappointment of users and mentions that it was an ambitious project that they couldn't deliver.
Despite the setbacks, Aaron Keller remains committed to the game's future and assures players that they will work to deliver new content to expand the experience.
"If we can't turn back time, what can we do? Add [new content] and improve Overwatch 2. That's how we move forward. This means more maps, heroes, game modes, missions, stories, events, cosmetics, and features; a game in constant expansion, evolution, and improvement. This is the future of Overwatch. One where we continuously create and innovate in what makes the game excellent for the players who are playing now," stated the title's director.
But tell us, what do you think of Aaron Keller's words?
