Unity is at the center of one of the biggest controversies a video game company has faced due to a decision that jeopardizes the business model of many studios. While many raised their voices in protest, others reacted inappropriately and, as Unity reports, sent death threats to the company, leading them to temporarily close some of their offices.
According to information from Bloomberg, Unity announced that some of its offices in the United States had to close their doors. Not only that, but John Riccitiello, the CEO of Unity, canceled a meeting with his employees.
But why did all this happen? As explained by sources, a Unity spokesperson stated that they received a "credible death threat." While the details of the threat are unknown, it was significant enough for Unity to consider taking important security measures.
"Today we were made aware of a potential threat to some of our offices," a Unity spokesperson told Kotaku. "We have taken immediate and proactive steps to ensure the safety of our employees, which is our top priority. We are closing our offices today and tomorrow that could be potential targets of this threat, and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation."
We will stay tuned and keep you informed if more details emerge about this situation.
What's happening with Unity?
If you haven't been following, let us tell you a bit about what has been happening with Unity in recent days.
Earlier this week, the company behind this popular game engine announced that they would start charging studios a commission for every time their games are installed. While the amount they ask for each installation may seem small (a maximum of $0.20 USD), it is a decision that puts the business model of several games at risk, especially those developed by independent teams.
In response, many studios have spoken out. However, even that has not been enough to convince Unity to reverse its decision.
