PlayStation has had great success with its exclusives, so for years it has stuck to a well-known formula: offering single-player titles that focus on narrative and stand out for their high production values. While fans of the brand are happy with these types of titles, some people have grown tired of them.
David Jaffe, creator of God of War, recently criticized PlayStation and Sony, as he believes that the formula of their games is becoming obsolete. For this reason, the creative believes that companies should bet more on innovation and thus diversify their catalog of titles.
David Jaffe believes the PlayStation gaming formula is already worn out
During one of his recent videos, Jaffe talked about Insomniac Games' work on Marvel's Spider-Man 2. He believes the title will be very well received, as its quality is undeniable. However, he thinks there is an underlying problem that affects all PlayStation exclusives.
From his perspective, the brand's first-party formula is becoming obsolete, which shows that Sony has been stagnating for years and has failed to innovate. For the creative this makes some sense, as the formula has proven to be a success and, thanks to it, gamers have been able to enjoy great games.
However, he believes that in the long term this will cause problems for PlayStation, since there are very innovative and attractive proposals on the market that do not resort to Sony's formula. Later, Jaffe clarified that this is not a criticism towards Marvel's Spider-Man 2, as he is sure it will be a great game and he is very excited to enjoy it.
"The trailer shows Sony has been stuck in the gear they’ve been in for a long time. This bread and butter formula is getting stale. There’s a point where I think you start to see the lack of innovation," Jaffe said in his video.
"I was clear that I am very excited for Spidey 2 and think it looks like a ton of fun. I was clear that I don't think/want Spidey 2 to be so innovative it stops being what we love about it. I was clear that even with all that, I think the Sony formula- for me- is getting stale," he later added on social media.
