The fighting game genre is experiencing a new golden age, this time away from the spotlight it had decades ago, as greatness in these times is closely tied to communities, fans, and tournaments. This has allowed the resurgence of some franchises, and one making a comeback is Fatal Fury by SNK, but that's not all.
SNK confirms it's working on something related to Art of Fighting
During an interview with Famitsu (via Tech Raptor), Yasuyuki Oda, producer at SNK, revealed that the Japanese company is not only working on Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, a release that marks the return of the legendary franchise starring Terry Bogard and company, but they are also working on something related to Art of Fighting, another iconic IP that stood out in the 90s and was an essential part of what would later become The King of Fighters, with Robert García as one of the favorite characters of players from those times.
What is Art of Fighting, and why did it stand out among fighting games?
While Yasuyuki Oda did not reveal what it is, it would not be surprising if a new installment of Art of Fighting is in development, given that the franchise only has 3 releases under its belt but has remained relevant through collections and re-releases.
Art of Fighting debuted in 1992 amid the wave generated by Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, which made fighting games trendy. Its proposal was somewhat different because you could only select Ryo Sakazaki or Robert García, following a path through the streets of Southtown, facing Mr. Big's gang.
Immediately, Art of Fighting drew attention for the size of its characters, detailed scenarios, the zoom it applied in close combat, but also for its difficulty. This SNK fighting game also delighted players with special moves that could be performed under certain conditions, which were visually striking and devastating. So far, Art of Fighting only has 3 releases, but there might soon be a 4th if SNK is working on it.
