Monk fails to make a pacifist NES Mario run; prays every time he kills an enemy

The monk's peculiar game session went viral on social media

A gameplay of Super Mario Bros. for the NES recently caught the attention of gamers and Nintendo fans for a peculiar reason. The player is a Buddhist monk who enjoyed the Nintendo title while following very specific rules.

To start with, his game was pacifist, so he was not supposed to kill any enemies. However, it was inevitable, and in his adventure, he ended up killing a few of Bowser's minions. The second rule was to pray every time he killed an enemy. This created a very peculiar gameplay that is gradually going viral.

Monk enjoys and suffers through his Super Mario Bros. gameplay

The player in question is Yoshimichi Ishida, a Buddhist monk from a temple located in the Ehime prefecture in Japan. He is also part of a Buddhist-themed entertainment collective known as The Namuzu, which has a YouTube channel where the gameplay was shared.

He has been a video game enthusiast since childhood and recalls enjoying Super Mario Bros in his youth. However, his playing style was very different back then, as he would defeat all the enemies on the screen. Now as a monk, he set himself the challenge of doing a pacifist gameplay, which involves not killing any enemies and seeing the game’s credits. If he kills an enemy, he then prays for having taken its life.

His gameplay has other special rules: the monk does not pray if the enemy falls off the stage by itself. On the other hand, he can jump on Koopa Troopas, as they are not eliminated instantly because they are protected by their shells.

The gameplay is unique in its kind because the player gets very nervous when seeing enemies or elements like the Star, which makes Mario invincible and defeats any rival upon contact. Of course, the monk prays more than once, as sometimes he cannot save all the enemies. Below, you can watch the peculiar video:
