Berserk: new fan-made anime might be canceled; Studio Eclypse's project is at risk for being "unauthorized"

In mid-May, Studio Eclypse released the first trailer for Berserk: The Black Swordsman, a new anime based on the work of Kentaro Miura, the renowned mangaka who tragically passed away in 2021, leaving his most iconic series incomplete.

The announcement of the new production excited fans of Guts, Casca, Puck, Griffith, and other characters. However, the community is now concerned about the project's future, fearing it may soon be canceled due to copyright issues.

The situation arose when Hakushensha, the company currently holding the rights to Berserk, made a statement on social media revealing that Berserk: The Black Swordsman and all related anime material are not authorized.

Berserk: The Black Swordsman began as a fan-made project, aiming to pay homage to the saga and the work of Kentaro Miura. The first trailer more than satisfied fans of the franchise, thanks to its high production quality and fantastic visuals.

The anime is set to launch in the summer of 2025, but now its future is uncertain. Hakushensha made it clear that the production lacks official authorization, and the first trailer was released without prior permission.

The company confirmed that Berserk: The Black Swordsman is not an official project and does not have the approval of Studio Gaga, which currently oversees the franchise and was the team Kentaro Miura worked with.

Due to this, fans fear that the anime may be canceled or that production could be halted indefinitely. It is evident that Hakushensha will protect the franchise's rights, as they want to prevent unauthorized parties from profiting from unofficial projects.

At the time of writing, Studio Eclypse has not issued a statement. Some members of the community criticized the studio for not securing the authorization for such a well-produced project, urging the company to negotiate the necessary permissions to make it a reality.

For now, all that remains is to wait and see what happens with Berserk: The Black Swordsman. Its planned 2025 release is now in doubt, especially if Hakushensha takes legal action against Studio Eclypse.
