The animation and manga industries are in mourning, as it was confirmed this morning that Kazuo Umezu, known as one of the great pioneers of the horror genre in Japanese animation, has passed away. According to reports, the renowned mangaka died on October 28 at the age of 88.
UMEZZ, the artist's company, shared the sad news in a statement highlighting his artistic work and contributions to the medium. Additionally, they wished him a peaceful final rest. Umezu’s family and close friends held a private funeral to say their last goodbyes.
Who Was Kazuo Umezu?
Kazuo Umezu was born on September 3, 1936, in Wakayama, Japan. From a young age, he showed an interest in storytelling and had a particular fascination with horror, the macabre, and the surreal. This interest led him to manga, a medium he used to develop a unique artistic style and tell unsettling stories.
For many, he is considered the father of horror manga. His career began in 1955, the year he published his first stories in the genre. Over the years, he established himself as one of the most notable creatives of his generation and a true icon for horror fans.
Some of his most notable works include Orochi, The Drifting Classroom, Cat-Eyed Boy, The House of Insects, Makoto-chan, Fourteen, among others. Several of his works were adapted for film and television.

Umezu was quite a versatile creative, as he also explored comedy and science fiction. In 1999, he announced his retirement, but a few years ago, he made a surprising comeback after decades of inactivity.
In 2023, his career was honored with the Special Award of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Kazuo Umezu influenced not only other horror mangakas but also video game creators, film directors, and artists in various fields. He has inspired authors such as Junji Ito, also known for his horror manga.
